Making friends has always been challenging for some students, especially newcomers in high school or college. To tackle this problem, people proposed a laundry list of suggestions like joining a sports team, participating in community services, or traveling. Of course, there will be constant arguments over which one is the most effective. From my perspective, friendship can be fostered through a shared love of sports.

Sports provide an excellent icebreaker. [topic sentence] The most practical reason for this lies in the fact that it brings out a variety of people with whom you share a common interest. The most crucial part of friendship, I believe, is undoubtedly establishing a bond. Instead of making small talks in order to figure out what you and others are in common, the sports you are involved in help you do that. Later on, you will have more to talk about after the games or practices. [reasoning] Oliver, a close friend of mine, would like to exemplify my point with his own experience. As a freshman in college, he struggled for months trying to blend in with the new environment. No matter how hard he tried, he found an invisible barrier between himself and others. It was the idea of joining a sports club that turned the tables. He noticed an advertisement on the bulletin board saying that the university soccer club was recruiting new members. A crazy soccer fan like him would never let go of the chance. After being admitted to the club, he spent at least two hours on the pitch practicing and shared those experiences with his teammates. They sweated together, competed for positions, and sometimes complained about the coach together for what he had put them through. As time went by, the barrier disappeared. Oliver tells me that to this day, his tightest circle of friends includes mostly his former soccer teammates from college years.[exemplification]

An icebreaker is not the only thing that playing sports can bring. Besides, it teaches you how to maintain a good relationship with a friend. The two keywords are respect and cooperation. [topic sentence] Respect helps you win a friend, and teamwork is the glue that holds friends together. [reasoning] Going back to Oliver’s experience, while playing in the university soccer league, he met Kevin, who later became his best friend. As players of two greatest rivals in the league, the friendship seemed unimaginable in an outsider’s eyes. Everything started with Oliver’s first match against Kevin’s. A powerful striker always receives “special attention” from the rival supporters. Kevin is no exception. The rival fans chanted insults to Kevin every time he touched the ball, which made him annoyed. It was Oliver who stopped the fans. When being asked about the reason, he explained that Kevin was a great player and deserved respect. His kindness and respect quickly established a bond between him and Kevin. Later, both of them made it to the university soccer team. Playing together in the same team set them a common goal to win the national title. Soccer is a game of eleven players. To win the champion, Kevin, as a striker, needed to score more goals, and Oliver, as a defender, had to stop the opposite side from scoring any goals. Three years’ efforts and three championship titles finally made their friendship indestructible.[exemplification]
